Ecole Mamquam School - Code of Conduct 2010-2011

We promote diversity in a safe, encouraging, healthy, drug free environment.

A)  Purpose
  1. To offer all students the right to learn
  2. To ensure that each member of the school community creates a school climate that is safe, caring, and orderly for learning and wokring.
  3. To set clear expectations for both students and adults that is founded on the five tenants of our mission.

    • Caring
    • Cooperation
    • Kindness
  4. To guide students towards accepting responsibility for their actions, applying self-control, and developing conflict resolution skills.
  5. To establish a school-wide approach to discipline that is founded on our beliefs that:
    • We are responsible for our actions and that behaviour is a matter of choice not chance.
    • Any behaviour that is disruptive is unacceptable
    • Discipline builds upon student's strengths, improves self-confidence, and encourages independence.
B)  Conduct Expectations
Conduct expectations apply at school, at school-related activities, while attending any school function at any location and in othe circumstances wehre conduct impacts the school enironment.

Acceptable Conduct
  1. Be kind and caring to other
  2. Treat others, their belongings and our school property with care
  3. Walk quietly, safely and orderly to and from all activities
  4. Play safely and obey playground supervisors
  5. Be cooperative; listen and follow directions
  6. Be honest about mistakes adn take presponsibility for you racitons
  7. Take initiative
  8. Respect yourself and the leraning rights of others
  9. to make our school clean, safe and inviting
  10. Keep you electronic devices ta home on in a backpack
Acceptable Behaviour to Avoid Conflict
  1. Tell the other student to stop
  2. Say, "Please stop. What you are doing bothers me."  Make sure the other student knows exactly what you find unpleasant
  3. Say, "I have asked you not to bother me.  If you don't stop now, I will have to report you."
  4. Walk away.  Find an adult and report what steps you took to resolve the problem.  The adult will then take the lead.
Unacceptable Behaviour
  1. Interference with the learning of others
  2. Interference with an orderly environment
  3. Littering
  4. Actions that are unsafe or create unsafe conditions
  5. Name calling, bullying, harassment or intimidation
  6. Inappropriate language
  7. Challenging authority and/or showing disrespect
  8. Physical violence
  9. Retribution against an individual who has reported incidents
  10. Illegal acts including but not limited to:
    • Possession, use, distribution of illegal or restricted substances
    • Possession or use of firecrackers
    • Possession or use of a weapon
    • Theft
    • Vandalism or damage to property
C)  Discipline and consequences
Application:  The severity and frequency of unacceptable conduct, as well as the age, maturity and special needs of a student will be considered in determining the appropriate disciplinary action.  The principal or his/her designee may immediately apply School Board Policy #5135 "when a student is found to be involved in... serious matters such as extortion, physical and/or sexual violence, the Administration will... suspend the student ..."

First stage consequence
  • A staff member warns the student.  Students may be asked to identify why his/her conduct is unacceptable and to explain why the acceptable conduct is important.  If a reminder is all that is necessary and the student is polite, the problem is solved.
  • A consequence is applied.  Classroom consequences, timeouts, detentions, loss of recess/lunch provileges may be appropriate.
  • If the behaviour continues, or the student is uncooperative and disrespectful, a referral to the principal may result
Second stage consequence
  • Referral to the principal or his/her designee.  In conference with the principal, students will be given the opportunity to learn from their actions by learning to identify problems, developing and applying consequences and behaviour plans.
  • Behaviour record is written
  • Parent(s) is/are notified
Third stage consequence
  • Referral to the school-based-team
  • Conference with parent(s)
  • In-school suspension
  • Out-of-school suspension
  • Indefinite suspension and referral to the School Board
D) Use of Electronic Devices
Application: Conduct expectations apply at school, at school-related activities, while attending any school function at any location ame in other circumstances where conduct impacts the school environment

Regular School Days
  • Personal use of electronic devices is limited to outside the school buildings, prior to the morning school bell and after class dismissal
School Related Functions
  • Personal use of electronic devices is prohibited.  Under special circumstances, teachers may exercise discretion where appropriate
Misuse
  • Inappropriate use of electronics, including but not limited to breaches of privacy, will be subject to the discipline and consequences procedures outlined in the school code of conduct
Lost, Stolen or Damaged Devices
  • Any person who brings electronics to school is responsible for the safe keeping of such appliances
  • The school holds no responsibility in the event of lost, stolen or damaged devices
